This cover art for Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë explores a side of Jane that she rarely allows others to reveal openly: her despair, vulnerability, and emotional depth, concealed beneath her dignity, restraint, and courage.
To shape this concept, I returned to the paintings Jane describes to Mr. Rochester. I was especially drawn to the image inspired by Latmos, the woman dissolving into the twilight sky, her head crowned with stars. In the novel, this figure echoes the Greek myth of Latmos and Endymion, carrying a sense of devotion, mystery, and quiet power.
While this reference beautifully complements the story, I also wanted to reinterpret the figure as a kind of guiding star for Jane herself. Despite the emotional turbulence that surrounds her, this woman embodies strength, clarity, and the determination to shape her own fate. She becomes a symbol of the inner light that guides Jane and helps her remain true to what she believes is right.
The final cover presents an ethereal and contemporary vision of Jane Eyre, shown both as a front cover and in a hardcover mockup. The composition centers on an elegant young woman with dark flowing hair, soft pink cheeks, and a luminous star light on her forehead. Translucent veils, swirling decorative textures, and muted gray-blue tones create a melancholic, dreamlike atmosphere that reflects both Jane’s inner fragility and her enduring strength.
